Area Guide
Specie Mesa
Specie Mesa is located between Telluride and Norwood near Placerville at approximately 9,613 feet above sea level. It offers expansive, panoramic views across six mountain ranges, including the Sneffels Range, the Wilson Range, and Wilson Peak. The landscape is defined by rolling alpine meadows, aspen groves, Gambel oak, piñon and juniper, and dense pine forests, an ecology that supports the area's rugged, quiet character. Long before today's ranch communities, the mesa was used for cattle ranching and open-range agriculture dating back to the late 1800s. Today, Specie Mesa is known for large-acreage, secluded mountain retreats, including luxury log homes and gated ranch neighborhoods such as Specie Mesa Ranch and Top of the World. Despite its secluded setting, it's only about a 30 to 40 minute drive from Telluride's ski slopes and amenities.
